On Thursday, September 13th, we hiked Harney's Peak in the afternoon. It was a beautiful warm day for a hike! Harney's Peak is the highest point in the Black Hills. The trail was 6 miles, round trip.
Harney's Peak trailhead.
View of the Cathedral Spires from Harney's Peak trail.
Standing in front of the Spires.
A macro of some pinecones on the trail. Even the moss that surrounded the cones and rock was bone dry from lack of rain.
A nice rock formation along the hike.
A macro of a bumble bee on a thistle flower.
The forest of pine we hiked through.
An interesting rock formation that resembled a side profile of a face.
Matthew taking a rest for a granola bar! I think he was pointing at a helecopter in the sky.
Getting closer to the summit!
Stopping to enjoy the views.
Just before reaching the summit of Harney's Peak.
More great views!
Almost there! Woot I did it! By this point, I remembered why I didn't like doing this hike when I was a teenager. It's not easy!
Hooray! The summit of Harney's Peak!
We spotted a mountain goat at the summit on some rocks. It's amazing how well they can climb!
The summit and overlook
The Spires from the summit.
More shots of us by the lookout tower.
Right before we were ready to hike back down from Harney's Peak, we spotted the mountain goat again. This time we were able to get about 10 feet away from him to catch a few shots of him!
Is that a smile?
Yum! Greens!
On the way back down, the lighting was hitting the Spires just right. I snapped a couple more shots of them.
